Hotel-Cafe De Zwaan is a classic Dutch café tucked away in the village of Ransdorp, just a short bike ride from Amsterdam North. This spot carries the feel of a traditional Noord Hollandse bar, where locals and visitors alike drop in for a relaxing break from their outings in the countryside. The interior has a lived-in, familiar vibe — nothing flashy or modern, but cozy and welcoming.

Its appeal lies in simple pleasures: a solid cup of coffee or tea, cold beer, and straightforward Dutch snacks like bitterballen and meatballs. The homemade bal gehakt (meatball) stands out as a satisfying, hearty option that pairs well with a pint or a coffee. The apple pie is another modest highlight for those stopping in during an afternoon ride or walk.

This café does cash-only business, so it's wise to come prepared, especially since it attracts visitors coming off long bike rides exploring the surrounding villages, such as Ransdorp itself, Zunderdorp, and Durgerdam. The atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious, with staff who are ready to chat and locals who appreciate a familiar, easygoing place to rest and refuel.

The best time to visit tends to be during daylight hours, particularly late mornings through early afternoons when cyclists and village visitors are out exploring. It doesn’t rush you along, making it an inviting stop to gather energy before continuing a trip through this quieter part of the Amsterdam region.

Overall, Hotel-Cafe De Zwaan suits those looking for a genuine village café experience — a spot where the focus is more on good company and basic, well-made food and drinks than on trendiness or scene-setting. It’s a nod to local Dutch traditions, sitting comfortably in the flow of everyday life on the edge of the city’s rural countryside.

A typical oer-Noord Hollandse bar/cafe where you can get a nice cup of coffee, drink, cake or snack. I had a home-made Bal gehakt and it was really good. Friendly people who are always ready for a chat. So, on your trip from Amsterdam North to Ransdorp, Zunderdorp and Durgerdam, don't forget to stop here to take a break!

Came here after a long bike ride tour. Nothing that special about this place but the hospitality was great. Cash only so bring it with you as they do not accept card. Coffee was good as well as the apple pie. A nice break from a long bike ride.

Lovely pub in a cute village! Worth the bike ride from Amsterdam to see a different part of the country. Been around for 80 years and definitely family run The beer was cold and people were friendly, all that matters to me!
